Uzoma Egemba has been detained by the Imo State Police after he burned his 12-year-old maid’s thighs, buttocks, and body for using his kids’ bicycles.
Egemba, a native of Mbaise, was apprehended at his Umuguma home early on Thursday as a result of the efforts of some concerned individuals, including social media influencer Darlington Ibekwe and activist journalist Chidiebube Okeoma.
Egemba, who is currently being held in custody at the headquarters of the New Owerri Police Division, ascribed his behavior to the devil.
He claimed that after seeing the girl riding the bicycle he had bought for his kids on Sunday, he had set the girl’s body on fire.
In response to a video clip created by the girl’s teacher that went viral on Wednesday, concerned Nigerians became interested in the girl’s situation.
The National Human Rights Commission, members of the Owerri branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, the girl’s state representative Okey Onyekanma, and activist Uba Dinamuta all showed up at the hospital and swore to see that the child receives justice.
The girl’s burn injuries were severe, according to one of the physicians who declined to provide her name to our correspondent.
She claimed that the girl would stay at the hospital for some time so that they could care for her.
Amarachi Jude, the girl’s mother, told our correspondent that she demands justice.
When reached, Michael Abattam, the Command’s police spokesperson, claimed not to have received a briefing.
